Episode 2.20

Downtown Pinõn Hallow

Maggie turned up the volume on her radio, as she drove along the tree lined streets past restaurants of the downtown district. The upbeat sounds of a pop song played as she drove around to the post office. As she stopped at a light in the center of town she nervously tapped her fingers on the wheel waiting for it to change to green.

Jeff Davis drove his red convertible down the streets of Pinõn Hallow, the 70’s rock station was blaring as he turned towards Main Street and the center light. He was absorbed in the music and saw too late the car in front of him. He hit the brake, but not in time as his front end pounded into the back of the car stopped at the light.

Maggie felt her body jerk forward as she pressed her foot against the break harder and felt her car jerk.

Conner’s Apartment

“Key’s, Key’s where the hell did I put them this time?” Conner asked himself as he looked around his dresser and his eyes caught the sentimental object, he picked it up and held it in his hands. “Where are you Maggie? You know I love you, please baby come back to me.”

Conner slowly unwrapped what Maggie had left for him. He opened it and inside was a silver paperweight shaped in a heart, with an inscription, “Conner, you have my heart always. No matter who I’m with. Love Maggie.”

“Daddy, what is it?” she asked looking up at him with the biggest smile.

Conner smiled, “Something I almost forgot about wanting.”

Conner put the paperweight back on the dresser and then picked up his keys, he couldn’t help but smile at the memory of locking himself and Maggie up together in the storage unit.

Maggie’s hands left Conner’s hair as they moved down to his chest. Her left hand stopped though as it felt something in his shirt pocket. Curiosity getting the best of her she reached her long fingers in and removed the key to the storage unit. She pulled back from Conner and looked at him, disappointment covering her face.

“Conner, you had a key this whole time?” She asked him angrily.

He sighed and nodded, “Yeah I had a key, I told you I wanted to spend time with you.”

Tears were forming in her eyes as she looked down at the key now in her hand, “Conner ya know what. This can’t continue. You are married and frankly, I do give a damn.” She looked back at him for a moment before going and unlocking the door. “Good-Bye Conner.” She then walked out leaving the door open for him to leave.

Down Town Pinõn Hallow

Becker stood on the corner of Aspen and Main talking with Jeff Davis about what had happened.

“I’m so sorry, I wasn’t paying attention. It was all my fault, I’ll pay for whatever needs to be fixed in the woman’s car.” Jeff said running his right hand through his hair. “I got caught up in the song and didn’t realize the light was red or that someone was stopped until a few seconds too late.”

Becker sighed, “Mr. Davis, you’re very lucky that she’s fine, but she will be transported to Memorial for a check up as will you.”

Jeff nodded, “I understand, I understand very well.”

“Maggie, now that I’ve gotten your statement about what happened, tell me why you didn’t let me know you were in town.” Siobhan asked putting her notepad in her jacket pocket.

Maggie sighed and rubbed her neck, “I wasn’t really ready to deal with anyone except for Luke.”

“Who’s Luke?” Siobhan’s concern was written all over her face.

“My college boyfriend. After I found Kevin in bed with Jade, I need to talk to someone and Luke came here from Florida to help me. Things have gotten romantic though.”

“I’m guessing Conner has no idea your back.”

“He had no reason to know, he has the red head.” A spurt of bitterness flew from her voice at the end of the sentence.

“That’s nothing at all, trust me Becker and I have had several dates interrupted by Conner mooning over you.” She sighed, “I thought it was bad when Kyle was all upset about Trista being on that reality show.”

Maggie wrinkled her eyes together, “You know that guy from the show with Kevin’s boss looking for love?”

Siobhan nodded, “Yeah he’s the new ADA and the new resident of your old apartment.”

Maggie hugged herself with her arms, “Have things changed that much since I’ve been gone?”

Siobhan nodded, “They sure have, now lets get you to memorial and get checked out. Let’s make sure the latest Davis returnee hasn’t injured you worse then you’d realize.”

Memorial Hospital

Jeff came back into the waiting room, “Miss Williams, I’m very sorry. Just send your bill to me at Hallow Hills and I’ll take care of it right away.”

“Thank you Mr. Davis.” Maggie nodded slightly before the nurse called her name and she was brought back to a cubical.

The nurse did the routine bits before the doctor came in. Maggie was sitting on the exam table, her legs slightly swinging as she waited nervously; she was really starting to hate hospitals.

The door opened, and in he came. He was tall, at least six feet if not more. His eyes were bluer then Maggie had ever seen, almost crystal like. The lines of his face were strong and smooth. She almost gasped but held back. He was wearing a pair of jeans, a scrub shirt, and a white lab coat. “Afternoon, I’m Dr. Raleigh what seems to be the trouble here?”

“Car accident, police want to make sure she’s alright.” The nurse said before rolling her eyes and hanging him the chart.

“Well you at least don’t look to be injured.” His voice was smooth, a slight accent that Maggie couldn’t place came through as if it only came on certain words.

“I feel fine, just a little stiff that’s all.” Maggie felt herself chewing on her lower lip, “I had my seat belt on, so I’ll be a little bruised that’s all. Really I’m fine.”

“It’s alright.” He said as he stood in front of her and took out the small flashlight, and checked her eyes and such, “You’re stunned and you’re right you’ll be bruised from the seat belt. If you feel dizzy or in more pain please call me.” He reached into the pocket of his lab coat and took out a card and wrote something on it.

Maggie took the card, “Thank you doctor.”

“You’re welcome miss Williams.” He smiled, revealing some of the whitest teeth she had ever seen. Suddenly she thought back to college when her friend Ada had said, “You’ve got to try everyone once, as long as they have good teeth.”

Siobhan’s Apartment

Siobhan leaned back on her couch as she flipped through the channels and stopped on the latest episode of Big Brother. “Oh good.” She said as she started to get into the episode only to have the phone ring.

She picked up the receiver, “Lane, what’s going on?”

“Siobhan! It’s Kyle, I’m just calling to let you know Trista and I will be back in a few days.”

“Kyle! How’s the island?” she asked feeling a smile cross her face as she and her friend talked.

“It’s amazing, you and Becker are going to have to come here.”

Siobhan laughed, “Yes because we have a reliable force that allows either of us to go on vacation. We got called out to a car accident today, a minor accident.”

“Yikes, well I’m sure sooner or later you’ll get some new rookie’s from the academy, they have a session coming up soon don’t they?”

“Yeah, the super training session. Basically two months of non-stop training. Then released to the stations as rookie’s who get placed with supervising officers.” Siobhan sighed, “It sounds extreme but it works. I made it that way.”

“Listen Siobhan, will you make sure the plants are watered and mail collected in the next few days, I can just imagine it piling up.”

“No problem, now go get back to your girlfriend. I have reality TV to watch.”

“It’s Rigged! We all know it!” Kyle teased back before hanging up.

Siobhan shook her head and turned back to the show

Hallow Hills

Jeff opened the door of his childhood home. Since his mother had gone off to Europe after his father’s death Adel redecorated it to the hilt. “Doug? Adel? Chad? Kip? Anyone here?” Jeff called out as he tossed a bag by the stairs.

Adel came to the top of the stairs, “Keep it down.” She told him as she began the decent to the first floor. “Del and Fallon are taking a nap. I get to spoil my grandchildren for the afternoon while Chad works and his nanny is off dealing with some family stuff. What are you doing here Jeff?”

“I came home, who are Del and Fallon?”

Chad’s children, twins there only a month old.” Adel explained.

“Who’s their mother?” Jeff walked in circles around Adel.

Chad’s wife, Bethany who passed away after the birth of the twins.”

“Where are Doug and Kip?”

“Doug’s in Paris, working you remember that right? As for Kip he’s in Florida, living with Phyllis Slater, you remember her? I think you two met a few times when I lived in New York.”

“Yeah, vaguely but yes. So I guess it’ll just be you and me for a few days then huh?”

Chad’s in the guesthouse.” Adel shook her head, “Just go to your room, and don’t wake the kids.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t.” Jeff took his bag and started up the stairs, “It’s good to be home Adel, very good indeed.”
