The soft
pink light engulfed the bedroom as Grace came back from the bathroom, now
wearing a short white robe. Conner lay in bed, under the covers, replaying
everything in his mind, and his heart ached. He had been so sure this was the
right thing to do, only now he realized he was wrong.
He got up,
wrapping the sheet around him as he went to the window, and looked out to see
Maggie in the driveway next door. He reached up and touched the glass,
realizing he might have just lost her forever.
“Conner, is
something wrong?” Grace was rubbing lotion into her hands when Conner turned to
look at her.
“Yeah,
Grace a lot is wrong actually.” He sat down on the bed, “This was a mistake,
and I’m sorry.”
Grace
turned green when she heard that, “What do you mean?”
Conner
caressed her face, “I’m in love with someone else. I thought she was out of my
life forever, but I saw her the other night. The friend I was arguing with at
the movie theatre.”
Grace
pulled the bathrobe around her body tightly, “I feel like I’m missing
something, big.”
Conner
looked over at the window, “Maggie and I were friends who started to date last
summer. Then
Grace shook
her head, “What are you saying? Are you saying that you just made love to me
and that it was a mistake because you want someone else?”
Conner
stood up still clutching the sheet, “I’m sorry Grace.”
“You’re
sorry?” Grace’s voice was filled with bitterness. “That’s all you have to say?”
she asked him as her hand caressed a candle stick on her dresser.
“I can only
be honest with you.” his eyes pleaded with her to understand.
“You’re too
damn late!” Grace yelled at him as her eyes burned with tears. “Why can’t a man
ever be honest. I mean my ex-husband couldn’t tell me
for years that he was disgusted to make love to me. He’d rather be fucked by
another man! And now you. I’m sick of it!” Grace clung
to the candle stick in her before swinging her arm, and knocking Conner
unconscious.
Maggie
pulled up to the large house and was shocked as she parked her car and went to
the front door. Carsyn must’ve given her the wrong address. As she rang the
door bell she saw through the window Carsyn coming from the back of the house.
“Hey, come
on in.” he opened the door wide and Maggie walked into a house that was
practically a mansion.
“Wow.” she
looked at the carpeting and saw an oriental rug in the living room.
“Come on,
Dinner’s almost ready. I’m grilling steak out back.” Carsyn led her through the
dinning room that had a table big enough for twelve before putting in a table
leaf. Then through the kitchen, that was large and spacious.
“This house
is amazing.” Maggie told him.
“Thanks, my
parents insisted on decorating it for me. I’m not really this extravagant.
Personally I would’ve been well not as flashy and old. I could’ve handled some
simple pieces and colors.” Carsyn told her as they stepped out onto the patio
and Maggie saw a built in grill and a swimming pool.
“I really
don’t mean to have my jaw dropped open, but I really wasn’t expecting this.”
He smiled,
“I figured, this is a perk of coming from a well off family. I wanted something
smaller, but was threatened with them buying a larger property with several
houses on it so they could live with me during the summer. This they will only
visit for two weeks.”
Maggie
smiled, “Well I guess that works out then. Are you close to them?”
Carsyn
shook his head, “Not as close as I was when I was growing up. When I decided to
become a doctor instead of go into publishing things got strained.”
“I can
understand that, I think my father was shocked when I decided to study business
instead of become a full fledged scholar in college. I just hope neither Cassie or Gary totally throw him off with some
scheme of becoming famous, though Cassie would be the one.”
“You’re
younger sister right, the one in pageants.” “Yeah, she’ll
probably will rebel big time.”
Siobhan’s
Apartment
“Hey Lysa,
how about you go and get ready for bed, then I’ll come and tuck you into your
sleeping bag.” Siobhan suggested while Becker was washing plates in the
kitchen.
“Okay,
Siobhan do you know when Daddy’s going to be back?”
“Soon I
think, he’ll probably be here before you wake up in
the morning kiddo.”
Lysa nodded
and ran into the bathroom and began to brush her teeth.
Becker came
into the living room, “You’re worried aren’t you?”
Siobhan
nodded, “Conner would’ve called by now. Something isn’t right. I just wish I
knew what.”
“He’s
probably busy with Grace. Don’t worry, he’ll be here.”
“He better
be cause I don’t want to think about the other
possibility.”
Grace
wrapped Conner’s body in the sheet as and then in the comforter from her bed
before dragging his body down stairs to the main floor. She sighed, and knew
this was the only way to keep him from going back to Maggie. “You’re mine
Conner McKay, now and forever.” she told the limp body as she then pulled him
down to her basement, leaving him down there with the sheets and his clothes
from earlier.
Once she
was back upstairs she turned all the locks on the basement door, trapping
Conner down there with no way to communicate with the outside world. She looked
in her hand and saw his car keys, there was only one thing left for her to do
she realized as she tossed the keys in the air and then caught them
Laura’s
Office-DI
Laura threw
the red pencil down on the desk and was about to scream when she saw John at
her door.
“That bad
huh?” he asked as he came in, closing the door behind him, “I wanted to say I’m
sorry for canceling our appointment for tomorrow.
“It’s
alright I understand, I’ve been married before.” Laura looked back at the
manuscript.
“I thought
you could use this. It’s some take out from Clint’s.” John placed the bag down
on the desk.
Laura
looked up, “Is this what I think it is?”
John
smiled, “Open it and see.”
Laura opened
the foam container and found one of her favorite dishes, “Beer battered chicken
strips, seasoned curly fries, I can’t believe you remembered.”
“Oh how
could I forget you ordered it almost every time.”
Laura
chucked, “I guess I did. Thank you John this is very sweet.”
“You’re
welcome. I also go honey mustard and Ranch dressing for dipping I wasn’t sure
if the honey mustard still appealed to you or if you’d jumped on the Ranch band
wagon.”
“Honey
mustard always.” She told him with a smile as she went to the mini fridge in
the corner and took out a can of diet Pepsi, “Care for one?”
“No
thanks.” He looked at her, “Laura, can you tell me why you’re suddenly in my
life again?”
Laura stood
in front of him, her fingers tapping the top of the can, “Fate I guess, I don’t have a real answer for you John.”
John
nodded, “I didn’t expect one really.”
“Alright then.” Laura placed her pop can on the desk, “Do you have time now to talk
about the mentoring program?”
“Actually
no, but we could set up a meeting for the day after tomorrow. I’ll have a
clearer schedule when
A smile
crossed Laura’s face as her mind schemed at ways to get John all to herself,
“That’s good to know. Um I’m sure you have to get back to
John shook
his head, “No Abby shares an apartment with my son Dan, and before my son Sam
started school in
Laura
nodded, “She’s wonderful with
Jeff
chucked, “That sounds like Abigail.”
Sadness
filled Laura’s eyes, “You got your Abigail and you’re Samuel. I’m happy for
you”
John
reached out and touched her face, “You never had children?”
Laura
smiled, “I was never married long enough to get to that point. I’m not too old, I could still have children someday, if I find the
right man.”
“I hope you
do. You deserve to have your Dominic.”
“You
remember that?”
“I remember
a lot of things Laura.” His voice was soft as his eyes looked into his and for
a moment his mind was back in high school and his body followed suit as he
leaned forward and pressed his lips against Laura’s.
Laura
responded to the kiss, wrapping her arms around John’s waist and opening her
mouth, inviting more from him.
John pulled
back and shook his head, “I’m sorry Laura, this was a
mistake. Good night.” he told her before walking out of the office.
Laura
leaned against the frame of her door and smiled, “I was right, putty.”
Trista held
her hands over Kyle’s eyes as they walked up the front path of a small ranch
style house. “Okay are you ready?”
“Yeah,
what’s going on Trista?”
“This.” She
said removing her hands, “What do you think?”
Kyle looked
at the outside, “It’s nice, what about it?”
“I looked
at it this afternoon while you were at work. I think it’s perfect. The realtor
is inside, just look around and if you don’t like it we’ll at least be able to
figure out what will fit us. But I will tell you that the neighborhood is
filled with lots of couples in our age range. A few single people, only a few
families are older really but I think this is perfect.”
Kyle smiled
and kissed her cheek, “Okay let me look at it.”
“Alright.”
Trista smiled as he went into the house. She sat down on the front stoop and
looked around the neighborhood.
Kyle came
out with a huge smile, “So, how badly do you want to live here?”
“Kyle don’t tease me.”
“I’m not, I
think this is the perfect place like you said, let’s sign a lease.”
“Really?”
She was practically jumping for joy.
“Yes. I’ve
got rent and all that set already with the realtor. All we have to do is set a
move in date and sign the lease.”
