Maggie ran
in through the back door of her house and quickly made it to the phone in the
kitchen. Her hands shook as she picked up the receiver and tried to dial the
simple three numbers.
“Pinõn
Hallow Emergency, what is the emergency?” The nasally operator asked.
“I know
where Conner McKay is, he’s locked in the basement of
Dan and
Abby’s Apartment
“Abby
that’s just nuts. Dad writing romance novels?” Dan
asked when he heard his cell phone ring, “Officer Adams speaking, yes, alright
I’ll be their in a few minutes.” he flipped his phone closed and shook his
head, “I have to go theirs an emergency on
“Where on
“210, just
down the block from our house.” he grabbed his jacket and keys and ran out of
the apartment.
Abby
starred at the sight of her brother in action, and for the first time ever she
saw him in a position of being an adult. “Ya know I
don’t think I’ve ever seen Dan so, well grown up.”
Abby rolled
her eyes, “Mom, our whole family is unconventional. I mean you’re a cosmetics
sales person, I’m a nanny, Dad’s a romance novelist, and Dan’s a cop. Sam’s the
only normal one and he had to leave the continental US to do so.”
“You’re
father is not a romance novelist, I would know if he was.”
Abby opened
up one of the drawers at the desk in the corner and took out the article Sam
had sent her, “Here’s proof. Sam sent it to me a few weeks ago.”
Abby took
the paper back, “Ask Daddy when he gets home then.”

Kyle and
Trista ran out onto their front lawn in bathrobes and slippers as soon as the
sirens and lights woke them from a sound sleep. Maggie stood in her driveway,
tears glossing over her eyes, as Cassie and Gary were safely inside watching
from the window. The police cars stopped quickly and Siobhan, Becker, and several
other officers including Dan Adams and Sean McKay flew out of them and in
position.
Becker held
the megaphone to his mouth, “Grace Waterside, please come out of the house.”
A shadow
could be seen in the window of a woman pacing before it disappeared.
Becker
looked at Siobhan and could see the worry in her eyes, “It’s the Pinõn Hallow
Police, you need to let us in Ma’am.”
Maggie’s
heart was racing, this was not good at all. She had no
idea what she was suppose to do now. The man she had
once loved with all her heart was locked in the house next door. She watched
helplessly as Becker and Siobhan moved into the house, breaking down the door
followed by Dan and Sean. She looked up at her house and motioned for Cassie to
get
“Listen Blondie.” Grace said from behind Maggie as she grabbed hold of her, holding a
knife to her throat. “No one is taking Conner away from me.”
“Maggie!”
Conner yelled out as he and Siobhan came out the front door, he was set to run
towards her when he saw Grace holding the knife to her throat. “Grace, put the
knife down. This has to end.”
“No, she
thinks you’re hers. She doesn’t understand that you and I belong together.”
Grace held Maggie tighter.
Maggie had
seriously begun to think Jade would be the only psychotic in her life, Grace
was much worst.
“Just let
Maggie go, and you and I can leave together.” He said as he held out his hand
to her.
“Really?”
Grace released her grip on Maggie, and almost completely released the knife as
well.
“Yes, just
let go of Maggie and drop the knife.”
Grace
pushed Maggie to the ground and tossed the knife behind her, but before she
could make it to Conner, Dan and Sean had grabbed hold of her and were cuffing
her.
“You have
the right to remain silent, anything you say can and will be used against you
in a court of law.” Sean McKay began as he made sure the cuffs were nice and
tight before he and Dan led her to one of the patrol cars.
Conner ran
over to Maggie and took her in his arms, and she in turn wrapped hers around
him, crying.
Beaumont
Hotel—
Laura Davis
sat at the large window looking out on the windy city, a glass of white wine in
her hand. The door from the living room of the suite opened and John Adams
stood as a shadow from the backlight of the room. As Laura turned around her
heart skipped a beat, wondering how a moment like this was real. This was the
sort of moment that had consumed her dreams, even when she was married to other
men. This was the moment she had waited her entire adult life and more for. “Is
something wrong John?”
“I was just
having trouble sleeping, and I saw you’re light on, figured the same was
happening for you.”
Laura
smiled, “Yes well it was a long day and tomorrow will be one as well with the
lecture in the morning and the flight back to
John took a
tentative step forward, and into the light. He wore pajama bottoms and a white
tank top. If Laura remembered correctly, he had only gotten more fit over the
years. “Yes, it will be nice to be home though, my son
should be back soon.”
“Sam, the one in college in
“No, Dan
he’ll be getting back from the police academy soon.” John sighed as he looked
out at the fading lights of the city, “Which means
Laura
laughed, “But Abby seems to be doing just well dating my nephew the minister.”
she paused and looked at him, “That sounded so weird, I guess I’ll be the
childless
“That is
weird, your nephew is our minister and he’s dating my daughter.” John leaned
back in his chair, and looked at Laura’s face in the soft hotel lights mixed
with moonlight. “You amaze me Laura. I mean to be as successful as you are,
even if its your family business that means nothing.
Most women get the shaft.”
“Its because of Doug. When we were younger he wanted to be
able to spend time with Adel and later with the boys. My father was ill, and
wanted to spend time with my mother traveling so Doug got left in charge. He
gave me publishing to control and Jeff entertainment. Doug controls everything
else though, imports, exports, pharmaceuticals, everything.”
“Do you
ever wonder what would’ve happened between us if we hadn’t broken up in high
school?”
Laura felt
her heart racing, how honest could she be with him, “Yes, at least once a day I
wonder about it. Especially after meeting Abby, I wonder if we had a daughter
if she would be as beautiful as she is.” She looked down at her empty glass and
then back up at John, “I never wanted to end things, but my mother pressured me
into it after she found my birth control pills. I guess I always thought that
we would have a chance again some day but then you married
John
reached out and caressed her face. He didn’t say a word as his lips met hers.
Hallow
Hills—Library
Jeff Davis
sat at the desk looking over documents for his new night club, but that wasn’t
his focus. His mind kept going back to the letter he had found,
could his brother be the father of Isabella, his adopted daughter? He took out
the paper again and stared at the father’s name space. He held it up to the
light and saw the faint markings of a name, Doug Davis. Jeff dropped the
paper onto the desk as the door opened.
“Doug,
what’s up?” Jeff’s voice had a hint of nervousness to it.
“I just
came to find some files, what’s wrong Jeffery?”
Jeff
sighed, knowing he could keep almost nothing from his brother, “I know about
Isabella, Doug. I know you’re her father.”
Doug
stopped, his light eyes drilling into Jeff’s, “What the hell are you talking
about? Of course I’m her father and Adel is her mother.”
Jeff shook
his head, “No Kathryn Layden is her mother.”
Doug could
feel his heart racing as he realized that he might not be able to keep his
secrets much longer. “Jeff, don’t say a word to Adel about this.”
“She has a
right to know Doug.”
“Not now it
could kill her.” He took several calculated steps towards his brother, “You
can’t let this get out. If it does it will destroy this family, and my
children.”
Hallow
Hills—Isabella’s Nursery
Isabella
cooed as Adel took her in her arms and walked her over to the rocking chair,
and began to sing a soft lullaby.
My little
angel, fall asleep. Don’t fret, nothing is here to
frighten you. Momma loves you, Daddy does too. You’re our precious angel girl.
Sleep angel sleep.
Adel
repeated the song several times until her daughter Isabella fell asleep.
Trista
looked at the chart in her hands, “You’ll be fine Maggie. You had one hell of a
fright but you’re all right.”
“Thank you,
do you know anything about Conner?” Maggie asked wrapping her robe tightly
around her body.
“Not yet,
Carsyn is still checking him.” Trista paused for a moment, “Maggie I know you
and Carsyn are dating—but I did see the connection you and Conner share out
their tonight. Carsyn is my best friend, I don’t want to see him hurt and if
you think you’re past with Conner could do so, I suggest you stop things before
its too late.”
Maggie
nodded, “I understand, but Conner and I had a chance and it didn’t work out.
Carsyn is the man in my life right now.”
Carsyn
looked over the latest test results, “You’re fine, you’ll just need a few
nights of good honest sleep, and some decent meals and you should be as healthy
as you were before this incident.”
Conner
nodded and glanced out the crack in the curtain, seeing Maggie pacing outside.
“Beautiful
isn’t she. I’m a lucky man to have her as a girlfriend.” Carsyn said
innocently.
“Yes you
are very lucky.” Conner could feel a metaphorical dagger rip through his heart
as he looked at her. “So I can go home, see my daughter, go back to work
again?”
Carsyn
nodded, “Yes, but I want you too take this number in case you find you need to
talk to someone. He’s a wonderful therapist.”
Conner took
the card, “Thank you.”
PHPD—Squad
Room
Sean McKay
sat at a desk filling out a report with fellow new officer Dan Adams. “How’s
Abby doing?”
Dan looked
up from the computer, “She’s good, she’s working for the
Sean let
out a mournful sigh, “I’m glad she’s well. I bet she would hate to see me back
in town.”
Dan nodded,
“Though I think my ex-fiancée would have a worst fate then you. You never asked
Abby to marry you.”
“It’s
complicated, and Abby knows that.” Sean turned from his co-worker and former
friend to pick up the phone and dial his parents
number. “Mom, it’s Sean. I’ve got great news for you,
Dad, and especially Lysa.” He paused as Fiona McKay spoke, “Conner should be
getting released from the hospital soon. I’m going to let him tell you where
he’s been.”
Fiona McKay
opened the door to her granddaughters room. Lysa had
fallen asleep doing her homework again. Fiona reached out and gently shook the
young woman, “Lysistrata time to wake up. I have important news for you.”
Lysa barely
opened her eyes, “What time is it?”
“Just a
little after two in the morning. This is important though. You’re father is
coming home.”
At the
mention of Conner, Lysa sat up straight and wide awake, “Really? Daddy’s coming
home? How do you know?”
“You’re
uncle Sean just called to let me know. I told you he’d be back and he is.”
