Lysa McKay
looked in the store window and gazed at the diamond and sapphire ring, “Dad
this is the one.” She pointed it out to him.
Conner
looked at the ring, “You think so?”
“Dad, this
is it. I mean look at it.” Lysa looked up at her father. “You can so see it on
Maggie’s finger.”
They went
inside and talked to the salesperson. After what felt like a mind numbing
half-hour they left with the new purchase.
“Maggie is
going to love it.” Lysa beamed as she followed her father into Film Magic.
Conner
couldn’t help but smile as he opened the door to the store. “You’re right, she
will and I’ll give it to her later today.”
“How are
you going to do that?”
Conner smiled
as he took the box out of the bag, “You little girl will find out later as
well.” He opened his desk drawer and put the ring inside next to a card, “Now
you have an appointment at the hospital.”
Lysa
groaned, “Do I have to?”
Conner
nodded, “Yes, you have to. We need to make sure you’re alright.”
Trial Part
30
Kyle stood
in front of the judge and jury, “You’re honor, I’d
like to call Abigail Adams-Jacobs to the stand.”
A moment
later Abby walked into the courtroom, her stomach in knots as she made her way
to the witness stand. She couldn’t look at
After she
was sworn in she sat down and Kyle came towards her, “Could you please state
your name for the record?”
Abby closed
her eyes for a moment and thought of the first moment she had felt Chad’s lips
on hers as she took a deep breath, when she opened her eyes after that second
she finally spoke, “Abigail Adams-Jacobs.”
“And what
is your connection to the defendant?”
“I’m
married to his cousin and I’m also the former nanny to his two children.”
Kyle took a
step closer, “So you’ve been in his home correct?”
“Yes,
that’s correct.”
“Where you working for him during his relationship with the victim?”
“Yes, I
was. I started working for him after his wife died.” She nodded as she spoke
and looked over at the jury sympathetically.
“What did
you see of the relationship between the defendant and the victim?”
“Very little. I never saw her around the house at all. She was never really
mentioned.”
Kyle
nodded, realizing this wasn’t going as planned. “You saw the defendant the
night of the crime correct?”
Abby
nodded, “Yes, I saw the entire
“Where were
you?”
“I was at
the grand opening of Home Cookin’, it’s the night my husband proposed.”
“And you’re
positive you saw Mr. Davis there?”
“Yes, I am.
I spoke with him momentarily after the proposal.”
“What did
you discuss with him?”
Abby pushed
her hair behind her ears, “He offered his congratulations on the engagement.”
“And later
that night, you went over to Hollow Hills correct?”
“Yes,
that’s correct.” Her heart was racing, where was this
leading.
“Why did
you go there?”
“I heard
the news on the radio and I wanted to make sure the children were all right.”
“What happened
when you got there?”
Abby
sighed, “I talked with Mr. Davis for several minutes before my brother, Officer Dan Adams showed up. He insisted I go home and Mr.
Davis agreed so I left.”
“And those
were the only times you saw Mr. Davis that evening correct?”
“Yes that’s
correct.”
“Is that
the only time you went over to Hollow Hills late in the evening?”
“Well no.”
“What was
the other time or times?”
Abby
shifted in her seat, “I helped him with some things for Christmas, on Christmas
Eve, I was stuck there one night due to the snow.”
“You were
also kidnapped by Mr. Davis’ former lover Brighton Simpson, correct.”
Abby was
silent for a moment as the memories came flooding back to her, “Yes.”
“All
because of how close you two appeared to be to the outside world.”
“Objection!” Christian finally stood on his feet, neither he nor
“Yes, I was
wondering the same thing Mr. Roberts.”
“I’m almost
there.”
“Then get
there quickly.”
“Mrs. Jacobs,
what did you see from Mr. Davis that evening when you arrived at Hollow Hills?”
“I’m not
sure what you mean?”
“Did you
see a man heartbroken, because his lover had been murdered?”
Abby
glanced at
Kyle sighed
and went back to his seat, and watched as Christian stood up.
“Mrs.
Jacobs, did you see my client kill the victim?”
“No, not at all.”
“Has he
ever told you he killed her?”
“No, he
never said that.”
Christian
nodded, “Do you think he could’ve done it?”
Abby
relaxed, “I don’t think Mr. Davis could ever do something so gruesome.”
Carsyn
Raleigh looked at the flowers that sat on the counter and tried to see if he
could find a card. Sure it wasn’t unusual to see an arrangement in the
building, but in this room well it didn’t happen that often.
“Hands off my Daisies.” Trista commanded as she stood in the doorway, her hair
swept back in a pony tail as she removed her stethoscope from her neck.
“I was just
curious who they belonged to.”
“Yes well
so am I.” She reached into the nearby cabinet and took out a glass before
filling it with water.
“You don’t
know who sent these?” Carsyn studied the arrangement, “Looks like you have a
secret admirer.”
“So I take
it you won’t be accepting the responsibility for these then huh?”
Carsyn
shook his head, “Sorry, you know me I would’ve splurged for Roses.” He kissed
the top of head, “I gotta go check on some patients.
See ya.”
“Yeah, see ya.” Trista was left alone with the flowers,
she took the card from her pocket and reread it once again.
You’ll think of me, and I’ll think
of you.
“I brought
you some coffee.” John stood in the doorway with the paper cup.
“Thanks.”
“Of course.” John went to the vacated seat next to Dan, “So Son, any plans to wake
up?”
No response
from Dan.
“Well then,
I think I’ll just have to start reading aloud to you.” John looked at
“I suggest
the last one. Who knows perhaps Narnia might just be
what he needs.”

“Where is
everyone?” She motioned around the room.
“Working, well
McKay’s in lock up he and Brighton Simpson are going to get transferred
tonight, a judge hasn’t decided if they’re going to the mental hospital or
state prison.” Becker put a file down, “And Siobhan, there’s something we
didn’t tell you.”
She put her
hand up to stop him, “I know.”
“You do? How?”
“I talked
to Dan before you guys went to arrest Sean, why do you think I wasn’t surprised
when you said he’s in lock up.” She started to pour herself a cup of coffee.
Becker
followed her, “That’s not exactly it Siobhan.”
He watched
her as she shook the splenda packet, “This isn’t easy
but
Siobhan
dropped the packet into her cup. “When did that happen?”
“When we
raided Alex Bowen’s place, Sean shot Dan, who fell and then hit his head on the
edge of the coffee table. He hasn’t woken up yet.” He took her cup and poured
it out in the nearby sink and then tossed the soaking packet into the trash,
“Go, I know you want to. His parents are probably by his bedside.”
“What about
his sister?”
“Court, she
was set to testify today for the prosecution.”
Siobhan
made a disgusted face and left, “I’ll be back in a bit, I promise.”
“Don’t
worry about it.” He called after her as he looked around, “They were working
together, they live in the same building. You’ll win
her back.”
A cough
announced the presence of someone else. Becker looked up and saw a man he’d
never seen before, “May I help you?”
“Yes, my
name is Nigel, and my boss is looking to purchase the vineyard just outside of
town.”
“I’m not
sure how this involves me.” Becker started back to his office.
Nigel
followed behind, “I’ve never been good at this. My boss,” he did a quick survey
of the office and knew Siobhan wasn’t around, “is Prince Elijah Bourbon.”
Becker choose that moment to take a sip of coffee, only to spit it
out. “Sorry, but do you mean the Prince Elijah Bourbon?”
“Yes sir I
do.” Nigel closed the door, “We don’t expect they’re to be any problems but we
like to let the local authorities know when we arrive just in case. We’d also
like to keep this on the how is it said, yes the down low.”
“Don’t
worry. If you need anything just ask for Chief Becker. I’ll send my best person
over.”
“Thank
you.” Nigel smiled and left.

Just as
Carsyn was climbing into his car, he heard the familiar ring of his cell phone.
He pulled it out of his back pocket and stood outside the car, “Dr. Raleigh.”
He paused
as he listened, “Yes, alright all taken care of. Thank you again.”
After
sliding the phone back into his pocket he got into his car, “I hope this plan
works.”
“And then Aslan said.” John read aloud as the door of the room
opened, showing the
“Ladies room.” She mouthed to him.
He nodded
and looked back to the page.
“Dad.”
Dan’s voice was dry, soft, almost unheard.
John sat up straight and looked into his son’s open eyes, “Hey buddy, I am so
glad to see you awake.” He quickly called the nurse into the room.
John put
his arms around her, “Nothing, Dan’s awake.”
