Trial Part 30

“Are you sure this is what you want?” Christian asked Chad in a whisper as Kyle Roberts announced the end of the states case.

Chad nodded, “Do it.”

The Judge looked over to the defense table, as Christian rose from his seat, “Are you ready to precede Mr. Quick?”

“Your honor, we have nothing to add to the state’s case and wish to rest.”

The journalists in the courtroom gasped, Adel Davis reached over towards her son and took his hand.

“Very well then, Closing Arguments will begin tomorrow morning.”

After several minutes of instructions to the jury everyone was excused for the day. Chad still sat behind the table as he thought about how this had all happened. He was guilty as sin, and yet the way things were looking he would get away with it.

Chad, we’re going do you want a ride?” His mother Adel stood before him.

He just shook his head, “No, I need to walk, get some air before I go back to the house.”

“Well just call if you need anything.”

“Don’t worry Mom, I’ll be fine.” He stood up, “Lets get out of here. I really don’t want to be here any longer then I need to be.”

Williams Home—Cassie’s Room

“Patrick, just do it already.” Cassie tossed his t-shirt back to him before she re-buttoned her top, “I don’t want to get caught.”

“We won’t get caught.” Patrick moved to the other side of the room, “Anyways what is your father going to do?”

“I don’t know but he’s protective, you should’ve seen him with Maggie’s ex-husband Kevin. That was disturbing at times.”

“Why?” Patrick asked as Cassie’s cellphone rang with the familiar tune of Billy Idols’ White Wedding.

“Maggie, what’s going on?”

“I have some major news that I couldn’t wait to tell you.”

Cassie held her hand up to keep Patrick from asking anything before she spoke again, “What’s going on? We already know Mom is moving in next door to you. She wants me to live with her in the fall.”

“It’s not that. But do you think you could be my maid of honor?”

“Yeah, wait what?” Cassie stood up and began to pace around her room, “What do you mean by maid of honor?”

Maggie laughed into the phone, “Conner and I are getting married.”

Cassie screamed causing Patrick to look at her confused, “Maggie that’s great, Dad will be so happy.”

“Great, listen we’re going to do this soon so I’ll call back with the date.”

“I can’t wait, love you big sis!”

“What’s going on?” Patrick asked as she closed the piece of plastic communication.

“My older sister is getting married to the love of her life.”

He couldn’t ignore the dreamy look plastered on her face, “You want that some day, don’t you?”

“What girl doesn’t?”

Patrick nodded and went to the door, “I have to go, I need to be at work in an hour. I’ll call you soon.”

“Bye Patrick.”

“Bye Cassie.”

Riverside Park

Abby sat on the bench with a copy of the daily paper, she had already ignored the story about Chad’s trial all day and finally she couldn’t ignore it anymore. It was now or later, this way would be less harsh no commentary from catty radio and television reporters. Here she could just scan for the key words.

“You won’t find the latest news in there.” Chad’s voice sent a chill throughout her entire body.

“And what’s the latest?”

“The defense rested this afternoon, closing arguments start in the morning.” He sat beside her and took the paper from her. “To think until a few months ago I had a weekly column.”

“You’ll have one again Chad.” Abby kept her eyes out on the river.

“What makes you so sure?”

“I just am.”

He took a deep breath as he placed the paper down on the bench, “Do you believe in Ethan the way you believe in me?”

Abby closed her eyes, “Chad I made my decision.”

“Things can change.”

“Yes they can.” She stood up, and then Chad did as well.

He took her hands and looked into her dark chocolate eyes, “Abby, I’m going to be free you believe that as much as I do, maybe even more. We belong together. I love you and you love me.”

“I married Ethan, and he’s a minister.”

“That doesn’t matter, what matters is love.”

Abby tried to stand tall; “I took vows in a church, with God as a witness.”

Chad took a step away; he knew she wouldn’t be willing to listen right now, “Alright. Fine. When this is over I’m taking the kids to the cabin.”

“Why are you telling me this?”

“So you know where to find me.” Chad put a hand on her shoulder and then kissed her softly on the mouth for just a moment, purposely breaking it before he walked away.

Abby covered her mouth with her hand as she watched him walk away.

Hallow Hills—Doug and Adel’s Bedroom

Adel pulled her husband into the room, “We have to talk.”

“What in God’s name is wrong? I haven’t cheated I swear!” He put his hands up in defense.

“I know that, I’ve been having you followed. No we have to talk about our son.”

“What did Kip do now?”

Adel shook her head, “I mean Chad, he’s going to get away with killing Kathryn.”

“What do you mean get away with?”

Adel stiffened, “I saw him leaving the pool house that night, I know he killed her.”

“The jury could see something Christian didn’t and convict him still.” Doug offered up. “Douglas, you know that won’t happen. So do we keep this secret?”

“Yeah, we keep it secret to our graves.”
